Waitzman\r\nRequest for Comments: 1149 BBN STC\r\n1 April 1990\r\n\r\nA Standard for the Transmission of IP Datagrams on Avian Carriers\r\n\r\nStatus of this Memo\r\n\r\nThis memo describes an experimental method for the encapsulation of\r\nIP datagrams in avian carriers. This specification is primarily\r\nuseful in Metropolitan Area Networks. This is an experimental, not\r\nrecommended standard. Distribution of this memo is unlimited.\r\n\r\nOverview and Rational\r\n\r\nAvian carriers can provide high delay, low throughput, and low\r\naltitude service. The connection topology is limited to a single\r\npoint-to-point path for each carrier, used with standard carriers,\r\nbut many carriers can be used without significant interference with\r\neach other, outside of early spring. This is because of the 3D ether\r\nspace available to the carriers, in contrast to the 1D ether used by\r\nIEEE802.3. The carriers have an intrinsic collision avoidance\r\nsystem, which increases availability. Unlike some network\r\ntechnologies, such as packet radio, communication is not limited to\r\nline-of-sight distance. Connection oriented service is available in\r\nsome cities, usually based upon a central hub topology.\r\n\r\nFrame Format\r\n\r\nThe IP datagram is printed, on a small scroll of paper, in\r\nhexadecimal, with each octet separated by whitestuff and blackstuff.\r\nThe scroll of paper is wrapped around one leg of the avian carrier.\r\nA band of duct tape is used to secure the datagram's edges. The\r\nbandwidth is limited to the leg length. The MTU is variable, and\r\nparadoxically, generally increases with increased carrier age. A\r\ntypical MTU is 256 milligrams. Some datagram padding may be needed.\r\n\r\nUpon receipt, the duct tape is removed and the paper copy of the\r\ndatagram is optically scanned into a electronically transmittable\r\nform.\r\n\r\nDiscussion\r\n\r\nMultiple types of service can be provided with a prioritized pecking\r\norder. An additional property is built-in worm detection and\r\neradication. Because IP only guarantees best effort delivery, loss\r\nof a carrier can be tolerated. With time, the carriers are self-\r\n\r\nWaitzman [Page 1]\r\n\r\nRFC 1149 IP Datagrams on Avian Carriers 1 April 1990\r\n\r\nregenerating. While broadcasting is not specified, storms can cause\r\ndata loss. There is persistent delivery retry, until the carrier\r\ndrops.
